When Gunel Babazade, an Azerbaijani, took up a stint during her undergraduate years in Keppel Offshore & Marine’s Caspian Shipyard Company in Baku, Azerbaijan, she was won over by the warmth of the yard culture.

Little did she guess that her heart would also be won over by a foreigner who worked at the yard. The gentleman was none other than Mr Liew Yuen Chen, affably known as YC, a project manager on overseas posting from Singapore, who was to become Gunel’s husband.

When Shanmugam Supramaniam joined the Singapore Harbour Board more than 40 years ago as an apprentice in an electrical workshop, he did not dream that it was the beginning of a lifelong career that would eventually take him from harbours to airports and around the world.

Today, the 62-year-old engineer at Keppel FMO is part of Keppel’s team handling maintenance works in airports all over Asia, such as the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Doha International Airport.

At 23, Sheena Neo boldly took the road less travelled and embarked on an overseas posting with Keppel Seghers in Qatar. While many would be daunted by an overseas posting at the start of their careers, Sheena cherished the opportunity to test her limits and widen her horizons.
