Keppel Seghers, the environmental technology division of Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), has secured a S$13.3 million contract to provide technologies and services for the first waste-to-energy plant to be built in the city of Changzhou, Jiangsu province, China.

Keppel Seghers will provide its state-of-the-art equipment design and technical services for the grate, atomizer, automation control and flue gas cleaning components of the plant.

When completed in third quarter of 2008, the waste-to-energy plant will be able to treat 800 tonnes of municipal waste a day to generate 12MW of green energy.

Mr Chua Chee Wui, Chief Executive Officer of KIE, says “This repeat order from China Everbright is a vote of confidence from our valued customer and affirms the strength and reliability of Keppel Seghers’ proprietary technologies.

“As a leading provider of comprehensive environmental solutions with a global footprint in more than 25 countries, China remains a key market for Keppel Seghers. We are keen to strengthen our position as the market leader for imported waste-to-energy solutions in China where we have 60% of the market by bringing our suite of services to more cities in this country.”

Keppel Seghers and China Everbright first collaborated in 2004 when Keppel Seghers provided the furnace, boiler and flue gas cleaning system for the Suzhou SuNeng Waste Incineration Power Plant. The plant, capable of treating 1050 tons of waste per day to generate 24 MW of green energy, was successfully commissioned and delivered last month. In March 2006, China Everbright awarded a S$13 million contract to Keppel Seghers to provide technologies and services for the first waste-to-energy plant to be built in the city of Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, China. When completed in end 2007, the waste-to-energy plant will be able to treat 800 tonnes of municipal waste a day.

As the demand for waste-to-energy incineration services grows in China due to the burgeoning population and heightened awareness of the need to protect the environment for sustained economic growth, Keppel Seghers is well positioned to provide its expertise in EPC services, technology package, equipment supply and other related waste-to-energy services to major cities in the country.

Currently, Keppel Seghers is also undertaking waste-to-energy projects in Changshu, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Jiangyin and Guangzhou.

Globally, Keppel Seghers has an established track record of involvement in thermal and waste-to-energy projects in Europe, USA and the Asia Pacific for more than 40 years. Locally, Keppel Seghers recently signed a 25-year Design-Build-Own-Operate contract with the National Environment Agency (NEA) for Singapore’s first waste-to-energy plant to be built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative.

The aforementioned contract is not expected to have any significant impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the financial year ending 31 December 2006.
