Keppel Seghers, the environmental technology division of Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), has secured a S$13 million contract to provide technologies and services for the first waste-to-energy plant to be built in the city of Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, China.

When completed in end 2007, the waste-to-energy plant will be able to treat 800 tonnes of municipal waste a day.

Keppel Seghers will provide its proprietary equipment design and technical services for the furnace, boiler and flue gas cleaning components of plant.

These state-of-the-art equipment and technologies will enable the plant to enjoy longer continuous operation, high waste throughput, and high steam production for power generation.

Mr Chua Chee Wui, Acting Chief Executive Officer of KIE, says “This repeat order from China Everbright affirms the strength and reliability of Keppel Seghers’ proprietary technologies.

“It is a vote of confidence from our valued customer that we deliver cost-effective and robust environmental solutions to meet the needs of our partners and customers.”

Keppel Seghers and China Everbright first collaborated in 2004 when Keppel Seghers provided basic and detailed engineering for the Suzhou SuNeng Waste Incineration Power Plant.

Keppel Seghers is currently the market leader for imported waste-to-energy solutions in China, with 60% of the market.

As the demand for waste-to-energy incineration services grows in China due to the burgeoning population and heightened awareness of the need to protect the environment for sustained economic growth, Keppel Seghers is well positioned to provide its expertise in EPC services, technology package, equipment supply and other related waste-to-energy services to major cities in the country.

Currently, Keppel Seghers is also undertaking waste-to-energy projects in Changshu, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Globally, Keppel Seghers has an established track record of involvement in thermal and waste-to-energy projects in Europe, USA and the Asia Pacific for more than 40 years. Locally, Keppel Seghers recently signed a 25-year Design-Build-Own-Operate contract with the National Environment Agency (NEA) for Singapore’s first incineration plant to be built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative.

The aforementioned contract is not expected to have any significant impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the financial year ending 31 December 2006.
