Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), through Keppel Corporation, was a founding sponsor of Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2011, held from 4 to 8 July. SIWW serves as a global platform for water solutions and brings policymakers, industry leaders, experts and practitioners together to address challenges, showcase technologies, and celebrate achievements in the water industry.  Themed ‘Sustainable Water Solutions for a Changing Urban Environment’, SIWW 2011 reflects a broader focus beyond urban water solutions and other issues that affect the urban environment, such as climate change.

With rapid urbanisation and the rising awareness of climate change, strong leadership is critical in steering cities through the challenges of a changing urban environment. Governments, corporations and industries need to work hand-in-hand to meet the demand for sustainable environmental solutions, which include the effective implementation of water infrastructure.

KIE, through its subsidiary Keppel Seghers, has been developing sustainable water technology solutions for more than 30 years. The solutions cover the full water cycle - from wastewater treatment, process water, drinking water and desalination, to water reuse and odour treatment.  Leveraging on years of experience and state-of-the-art technologies developed in-house, Keppel Seghers has established an outstanding track record of over 350 successful water references worldwide, and is a global leader in environmental solutions and engineering.

KIE’s booth at SIWW 2011 featured displays on its various subsidiaries and their suite of capabilities, as well as models of the Tianjin Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) and the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works.

In April 2011, a joint venture agreement was inked between KIE and Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co., Ltd to pursue the building, ownership and operation of a water recycling plant in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (Tianjin Eco-City). The proposed water reclamation plant will include a wastewater effluent polishing unit with capacity of 100,000 m3 per day and a water recycling facility that can produce 20,000 m3 per day of recycled water initially, with the possibility to increase the capacity of recycled water to 42,000 m3 per day. The water reclamation plant will serve the entire Tianjin Eco-City, upgrading treated wastewater effluent from an existing wastewater treatment plant to meet the most stringent national standards for wastewater discharge, and produce high-quality recycled water for reuse in non-potable applications.

Keppel Seghers’ Doha North Sewage Treatment Works project in Qatar was also featured at this year’s booth. The facility will be the largest greenfield wastewater treatment, water reuse and sludge treatment plant in Qatar when completed.  With a peak design capacity to treat wastewater of up to 439,000m3 per day, the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works will serve a projected population of over 900,000 when completed. This modern facility will feature advanced biological treatment processes as well as membrane and ultra-violet technologies to produce high quality reclaimed water for reuse.
