Keppel secures S$35 million repeat order for WTE plant in the Netherlands
Keppel Seghers, the environmental technology division of Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), has secured a S$35 million contract offering technologies and services to expand an existing Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant in Moerdijk, southwest of the Netherlands.
The Moerdijk plant is the third largest plant in the Netherlands with a capacity to treat 660,000 tons of solid waste a year.
The contract is for the engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing and commissioning of Keppel Seghers’ proprietary Prism technology, and a steam boiler for the expansion of the WTE plant owned and operated by Afvalverbranding Zuid-Nederland NV (AZN).
The state-of-the-art secondary air Prism technology raises the overall energy efficiency of the plant. It will optimise air flow and mixing of flue gas as well as improve the combustion and heat conversion efficiency of the WTE plant. The proven Prism technology will increase the effective throughput of the plant, reduce unscheduled stops and lower maintenance cost. It will also avoid the severe corrosion problems that many existing WTE plants are dealing with, extending the useful life of such plants.
Said Mr Marc Van Craen, Business Manager (Waste-to-Energy) of Keppel Seghers, “This repeat order from AZN is a vote of confidence from our valued customer for the superiority and reliability of Keppel Seghers’ technologies.
"Europe has a large number of Waste-to-Energy plants, many of which have been in operation for some years and are now facing problems as the waste that they are treating has considerably higher heat value than they were designed to handle originally. The Prism offers owners and operators of such plants a cost-effective solution to deal with these problems, thus extending the plant life, increasing plant throughput and lowering maintenance cost" Mr Van Craen continued.
Keppel Seghers has previously delivered prisms to the first three production lines of the Moerdijk plant, and performed retrofit works on the existing grates and flue gas cleaning system. The prisms increased the availability of each production line by 500 hours a year, corrosion of the boiler was decreased by a factor of 10 to 0.05mm per 1000 hours in the critical zones. In addition, the interval between manual cleaning of the boiler was extended by 50%, while the overall maintenance costs were reduced by 14%.
One key benefit of the Prism technology is that it can be retrofitted into most incineration plants, regardless of the supplier of the original incinerator design. Keppel Seghers has been supplying Prisms to plants which use both Keppel Seghers designs as well as other supplier’s incinerator designs.
The aforementioned contract is not expected to have any significant impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the financial year ending 31 December 2007.
